Liverpool supporters have urged Jurgen Klopp to consider the prospect of utilising Xherdan Shaqiri from the start during Sunday’s top-of-the-table encounter against Manchester United.

This certainly would be a huge gamble from the manager’s perspective.

Why? Well, for a start, the 29-year-old forward has clocked up just 84 minutes of Premier League action so far this term.

Also, Shaqiri is still yet to start in the top-flight for the English champions in 2020/21. Indeed, much of this has been the result of injury, however.

His most recent Premier League start came back in December 2019 during a 2-0 victory against Watford.

Still, given Liverpool’s recent performances against Newcastle and Southampton, some added impetus in attack certainly wouldn’t go a miss.

Shaqiri proved his quality against Aston Villa last Friday, after all. The former Bayern Munich star clocked up two assists despite featuring for only 29 minutes during the 4-1 win.

If he were to start, it’s likely that Shaqiri – who earns £80,000-a-week, as per Spotrac – would be utilised in midfield. Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara both pick themselves but there is still a potentially vacated position the Switzerland international could fill.

Both Gini Wijnaldum and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain were guilty of failing to inspire much creativity in Liverpool’s last Premier League outing. The pair failed to create a single opening between them, as per WhoScored.

With that said, Shaqiri, then, could be a risk worth taking from Klopp’s perspective.

After all, Liverpool have profited in the past from a Shaqiri inspired masterclass against Manchester United. His memorable brace back in December 2018 proves as such.

With that said, let’s see what Liverpool supporters have had to say on the matter.
