A minute’s silence will be held ahead of Portugal’s first Women’s EURO match tonight in memory of Diogo Jota after his tragic death earlier today.

The Liverpool forward and Portugal international died aged just 28 in a car accident in Spain with his brother, Andre Silva.

It is understood the vehicle suffered a tyre blowout when heading towards Benavente, with Zamora News reporting that emergency services were called to the scene shortly before 1am on Thursday morning.

?According to the Zamora provincial council, firefighters attended the scene on the A52, known as the Palacios de Sanabria, after the vehicle caught fire.



Portugal Women begin their EURO 2025 campaign against Spain tonight in Bern, Switzerland, where the Portuguese Football Federation has requested a minute’s silence.

A statement from the federation following Jota’s death read: “The Portuguese Football Federation has already requested UEFA to hold a minute of silence, this Thursday, before our National Team’s match against Spain in the Women’s European Championship.”

England's Lionesses have also paid tribute to Jota, his brother and the whole Portuguese Women's team out in Switzerland.

The tribute read: "We are devastated at the tragic loss of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva.

"The Lionesses send our heartfelt condolences to Diogo's family and friends, and all the players, staff and fans connected to Liverpool FC, his former clubs and the Portugal national teams.

"We stand beside the Portuguese team here in Switzerland and the whole football family in honouring Diogo and Andre's memory."

This year's Women's EURO tournament officially got underway on Wednesday July 2, with UEFA confirming all matches being played today and tomorrow will pay tribute to the Liverpool star with a minute's silence ahead of kick-off.

They said: “A moment of silence will be observed at all of today’s and tomorrow’s UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 matches in memory of Portugal international and Liverpool FC forward Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva who tragically passed away today.”

The BBC has also reported that black armbands will be worn by Portugal players for the match.

The game kicks off at 8pm BST.
