Jacob Ramsey is set to join Newcastle United instead of Nottingham Forest amid interest from both clubs in the Aston Villa man.

Despite Ramsey’s imminent exit, Villa are facing concerns regarding UEFA’s Squad Cost Rules ahead of the Premier League season.

The 24-year-old was handed just 19 top-flight starts by Unai Emery last term, and will hope to make a greater impact at Newcastle this campaign.

Villa have eyed Leandro Trossard as a Ramsey replacement after the winger has fallen down the pecking order at Arsenal.

Ramsey tasted Champions League football with Emery’s side last term, helping them reach the quarter-finals.

After notching one goal and two assists in 10 Champions League appearances last season, Ramsey is clearly keen to remain at the top table of European football.

Meanwhile, unlike either Villa or Forest, Newcastle successfully landed a top-five spot in the Premier League last term.

After making a lack of Premier League starts for Villa last term, Ramsey will be eager to enjoy more playing time next season.

However, the fact that Nottingham Forest retained Morgan Gibbs-White despite Tottenham’s strong interest scuppered the 24-year-old’s chances of enjoying regular minutes in the East Midlands.

Gibbs-White’s presence at the City Ground means that Ramsey would not be able to frequently operate in the playmaker role.

Contrastingly, Newcastle utilise a midfield three, handing their soon-to-be new signing plenty of opportunities to feature.

Nuno Espirito Santo has done a strong job at Nottingham Forest, and deserves plenty of credit for steering the East Midlands side to European football.

However, Howe has done an even more stellar job at Newcastle, steering the Magpies to Carabao Cup glory last season.

Ramsey was clearly eager to join up with the 47-year-old, who is vying to mark his mark on this season’s Champions League.
