Premier League outfit Brentford has confirmed the arrival of a couple of Liverpool youngsters, with goalkeeper Layton Nicholls and left-back Nathaniel Ogungbemi linking up with the Bees' academy.

Brentford announced its new academy scholars, of which Nicholls and Ogungbemi are two, last Friday (July 4), but the information was understandably not widely picked up as the global soccer news agenda was dominated by Diogo Jota's tragic passing.

Brentford has made a habit of signing Liverpool players in recent years, at both academy level and first-team level.

Centre-back Kerron Samuels joined Brentford from Liverpool in 2023, while goalkeeper Ben Winterbottom arrived at Brentford in 2021; Samuels' Brentford contract expired last week, while Winterbottom has just joined Barrow in League Two.

The bulk of the money that Liverpool brought in during the 2024 summer transfer window came from Brentford, as Thomas Frank signed Sepp van den Berg and Fabio Carvalho, while Caoimhin Kelleher also completed a move to the Gtech Community Stadium last month.

As for possible incomings at Liverpool, Eintracht Frankfurt appear to be preparing for the departure of striker Hugo Ekitike, amid apparent interest from the Reds as well as Chelsea.

Ekitike has been the subject of speculation linking him with a move away from the Bundesliga club for several weeks, after a season in which he scored 22 goals in 48 appearances in all competitions

A number of Premier League sides have been linked with Ekitike, including Liverpool, with the Reds expected to enter the market for a new striker amid Darwin Nunez's expected departure.

Liverpool has been linked with Hugo Ekitike

While the sporting consequences of Jota's death are completely irrelevant in the grand scheme of things, the Portugal forward's tragic passing coupled with Nunez leaving is set to leave Liverpool without a senior striker in its squad.

Frankfurt has hinted that it is planning for Ekitike's departure with the acquisition of Jonathan Burkardt from Bundesliga rival Mainz.

Burkardt, 24, scored 19 goals in 30 appearances in all competitions for Mainz last season, with 18 of those strikes coming in the league, making him the fourth-highest scorer behind Harry Kane, Patrik Schick and Serhou Guirassy.

Transfer expert Ben Jacobs told Betway that Liverpool is among the clubs that are worth keeping an eye on with respect to a potential bid for Ekitike
