Liverpool are in the market for a new number nine and all the signs are pointing to one man.

The Premier League is often regarded as the best in the world and the standard of players seems to just get better and better.

Liverpool have had their fair share of world class talent and still have many players that could be classed in this bracket today, although they are on the hunt for some more.

Florian Wirtz is due for his medical Friday and will soon become a Red, with the German a player who is already held in high regard.

However, Liverpool still want a striker to position in front of the 22-year-old to maximise his creative output.

Victor Osimhen is reportedly on Liverpool’s radar, and the Nigerian certainly knows where the back of the net is, suggesting he would be the perfect option for the Reds this summer.

Another reason why they should perhaps try and sign him is because of the reputation he already has among those who play in the Premier League, with the 26-year-old striking fear into the eyes of defenders.

As well as tearing it up in Europe over the last five or so years, Osimhen has made a name for himself in the national team as well.

Playing 41 times for the Super Eagles, the Nigerian has netted 26 goals, with his teammates admitting that they are glad he is on their team instead.

Fulham defender Calvin Bassey is one defender who has highlighted just how good he is, telling The Athletic just that.

“He is a joke, he’s the only striker I know who can run a back line by himself,” Bassey said in December 2023.

“He can run in behind, he can head, finish, he can do everything.

Hopefully, he comes at some point but I’d rather have him in my team than against him!”

Liverpool are in desperate need of a striker who does not just score goals but can link up with the rest of the team too, something Bassey clearly thinks he can do.

If all the signs were not pointing to him before, Reds fans might be more convinced now, especially as Bassey isn’t even the first player to reveal just how hard he is to play against.

If one case study example wasn’t enough, Nottingham Forest’s Ola Aina has provided even more evidence that proves why Liverpool should sign his Nigerian teammate.

When asked to name his toughest opponents by ESPN in May 2025, Aina highlighted Cristiano Ronaldo and Osimhen, with that perhaps being the clearest indication why they need to buy him swiftly.

“He doesn’t give you any time to breathe.

As a defender, if you’ve got a striker just on to you, relentless, it’s jarring,” is what Aina said about the 26-year-old.

Osimhen scored 26 goals last season in the league and has proven himself to be one of the best strikers in the world, with many of his teammates clearly agreeing.

The Nigerian would cost Liverpool around £60m and with Napoli interested in Darwin Nunez and Federico Chiesa, a swap deal could even be completed, meaning Liverpool could get one of the world’s best at a cut-price.
