The Premier League explained that the decision was taken to send Anthony Gordon off against Liverpool because the match referee deemed his challenge on Virgil van Dijk to constitute serious foul play.

Simon Hooper did not orginally deem Gordon's challenge worthy of a red card, but after being advised to review the challenge by the video assistant referee, the official changed his decision.

A statement from the Premier League match center said: "After VAR review, the referee overturned his on-field decision of a yellow card to Anthony Gordon.

Referee announcement: 'After review, the Newcastle United number 10 commits a serious foul play challenge.

The challenge is with speed and makes clear contact on the Liverpool number 4's calf.

My final decision is red card to Newcastle United number 10.'”

Van Dijk was clearing the ball as half-time approach when Gordon chopped him down with a brutal challenge which left the Liverpool captain writhing on the floor in agony.

Gordon raked his foot down the back of Van Dijk's calf, leaving visible stud marks, and the one-time Liverpool target did not protest when he was given his marching orders.
