Liverpool must be handed the Premier League title even if the season is not completed, says European football expert Julien Laurens. Liverpool were 25 points clear at the top of the table when football in England was suspended earlier this month due to the coronavirus pandemic. Jurgen Klopp's side need just a maximum six points from their remaining nine matches to confirm their first top-flight title since 1990.

A joint statement from the FA, Premier League and EFL last week said the season had been extended indefinitely in order to ensure the season reaches its conclusion.

However, there are growing concerns from some fans and pundits the season could be scrapped and declared null and void.

But if that is the case, Laurens says Liverpool must be crowned champions because it would be unfair on the Reds if their near-perfect league campaign ended with no reward.

Laurens told ESPN FC: "You have to [give Liverpool the title], even if you can't finish the season, you can't resume it, because it might take a few more months to declare the whole situation completely healthy, for people to play football again or basketball or other sports or going back to work in a healthy environment.

"But even if you can't resume it, you've got nine games left to play depending on what games teams have to play, Liverpool are 25 points clear.

"It would be so unfair not to crown them champions after the season they've had, only the one defeat at Watford they've had.

"Even if you can't resume and play the remaining games of the season, they have to be champions, there's no debate about it."

Meanwhile, former Chelsea midfielder Craig Burley claims the authorities have much harder decisions to make than whether Liverpool should be declared title winners or not.

"Well the trouble is, giving Liverpool arguably the easiest job out there because whilst technically it hasn't happened, they're going to win it," Burley said.

"Now, how do you face the other issues? Who's going to get the Champions League spots?

"You can't just hand them out at the moment because that's all we had to talk about before this global pandemic came along because the Champions League spots were the only thing, and relegation, that was keeping the season sort of bubbling.
