Premier League to introduce 'thicker lines' for VAR marginal offside calls next season

The Premier League will reportedly use thicker lines when determining VAR decisions next season as a response to the controversial marginal offside calls.

The desire to remove the tightest offside calls follows how the Dutch FA use VAR. That system sees the VAR judge offsides using two 5cm lines and if they touch the final decision remains with the on-field officials.

In the Premier League last season, players were being deemed offside by the length of, for example, a toe or an armpit despite seeming perfectly level with the last defender to the naked eye - but the system of using thicker offside lines would see players ruled onside in such instances because of the greater margin of error.

While it is not yet known exactly how the new system will be implemented in the Premier League, having a greater margin of error when it comes to tight offside decisions would have had a significant impact on certain matches last season.

Jordan Henderson's stoppage-time winner was ruled out after Sadio Mane was ruled to have been offside, but with thicker lines that goal would have been onside and allowed to stand.

Patrick Bamford had his goal to make it 1-1 ruled out after his arm was deemed to be offside - he was pointing to where he wanted the ball to be passed - but with next season's rules that goal would also have been a legitimate one.

Premier League players and fans were often united in their fury last season at the long delays and incredibly tight nature of many VAR decisions.
