Liverpool have decided to end their pursuit of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi after submitting two bids that were both rejected by Palace. The Premier League champions are reportedly unwilling to meet Palace's asking price of around €55 million (£47.9 million), which the Eagles are demanding despite Guehi being in the final year of his contract.
Guehi, a former Chelsea centre-back, has attracted strong interest from Liverpool as they look to strengthen their central defensive options following the departure of Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen. Liverpool's current senior centre-backs include Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate as the first-choice pairing, with Joe Gomez and Rhys Williams as backups, indicating the club's need for additional reinforcements.
During the summer transfer window, Liverpool have already invested heavily, spending over £250 million on several players, including Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, and others. Despite this, the club appears reluctant to meet Palace’s high valuation of Guehi and has opted to shift focus away from the defender.
Additionally, Newcastle United have also shown interest in Guehi but are reportedly unwilling to exceed a £40 million offer, which is well below Palace's demands. As the transfer window progresses, there is speculation that Palace might reconsider their stance if Guehi’s market value drops closer to the window's deadline on September 1.
Overall, Liverpool’s pursuit of Marc Guehi has cooled following demonstrated unwillingness to meet a steep transfer fee, signaling that the club may look toward alternative defensive targets in the remaining days of the window.
