The fallout of Diogo Jota’s tragic car accident that claimed the lives of both Liverpool’s N0.20 and his brother Andre Silva is continuing into Friday.

Their bodies were repatriated to Gondomar, just outside Porto, in the early hours of July 4.

A hearse arriving at the São Cosme funeral parlour was met with applause, chants of “Diogo” and tearful embraces from locals and travelling Liverpool supporters.

A municipal day of mourning has been declared, with flags at half-mast and businesses closing in solidarity.

A funeral is planned for this Saturday.

Jose Manuel Macedo – a parish priest at the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar – said to CNN Portugal:

“The bodies of the two brothers will be taken to the Easter chapel to pray tomorrow and then there will be a funeral.

“We are ready to join people in remembering their lives?

At the same time, we share the pain, as well as the hope of the believers.”

The PA News Agency also carried forth a translated message from Macedo that a wake for the brothers will be held on Friday at the Capela da Ressurreição, with proceedings set to start later in the afternoon.

The following funeral service is scheduled for Saturday at 10am at the Igreja Matriz, a chapel in Gondomar.

Liverpool FC released an official statement expressing devastation and requesting privacy for the families, promising continued support.

Manager Arne Slot described Jota as “a friend to everyone” and emphasised the need for the squad to grieve collectively.

In tribute, the club has announced plans to “immortalise” the No 20 shirt worn by Jota, ensuring his legacy endures at Anfield.

Tributes have poured in globally: moments of silence have been observed at matches, floral memorials adorn Anfield’s Shankly Gates, and the hashtag “ForeverJota” has trended as fans share memories.

Portugal’s national team and UEFA held a minute’s silence during the Women’s European Championship clash between Spain and Portugal on Thursday night.

It has also been reported that Liverpool FC are postponing the start of their pre-season.
