Over recent years, Liverpool have been one of the strongest teams in the Premier League.

They have consistently been battling for the title and have even managed to come away with a Champions League over the last five seasons.

Granted, this hasn’t all just been handed to the club as they have had to sell and reinvest their money into areas of the squad which need it.

The Liverpool transfer regime

Since Jurgen Klopp’s appointment back in 2015, the Reds have been something of a ‘sell to buy’ club.

That is, despite the Merseyside outfit being the main title rivals to Manchester City.

Although this format has paid off in terms of FFP, it has meant Liverpool can’t be as competitive as their peers.

The likes of Chelsea and Manchester City have easily outspent Liverpool and, in the case of City, this extra investment has evidently paid off.

In Todd Boehly’s case, despite spending over £1b in transfer and loan fees, the Blues find themselves nowhere near the Champions League spots.

Although some of Chelsea’s additions such as Cole Palmer and Christian Nkunku (when fit) have paid off, for every ‘good’ player which has joined, there are at least two or three not so good.

For example, Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia were some of the main talking points in both Liverpool and Chelsea’s summer transfer window.

The clubs were constantly going back and forth with bids until eventually, both joined the West London side.

Although at the time this seemed catastrophic to Liverpool, the addition of Wataru Endo has somewhat eased the blow.

The 2023/24 season was the campaign which Klopp decided to revamp his engine room.

For many years, it had been known that the Reds’ midfield needed a bit of a shuffle.

Especially following the 2022/23 term where Liverpool finished in fifth.

How Liverpool have found success in recent seasons

Although Liverpool’s recent seasons have mostly been fulfilled with success due to their transfer regime and the tactical decisions made by Klopp, there has been the odd occasion where the club have taken an accidental loss.

Most of the players which the Reds sell are either no longer part of the clubs’ plans or the offer is too good to refuse.

Or, some can even be academy sales which are needed to generate extra revenue for the team.

A couple examples of these are that of Rhian Brewster and Dominic Solanke.

Whilst the duo both started their careers with Chelsea, Liverpool made the most of both signings and sold them on for exceptional fees.

Brewster was sold to Sheffield United for a fee worth around £23.5m whilst Solanke cost Bournemouth £19m.

Whilst it felt like the duo ‘flopped’ once they moved away from Anfield, Solanke has found himself in stellar form this term and has scored 19 Premier League goals, just one less than Erling Haaland.

This form hasn’t gone unnoticed as former top flight striker, Glenn Murray believes that the attacker has “almost completed the Premier League.”

What Glenn Murray had to say about Dominic Solanke

“He has been exceptional this season for Bournemouth,” said Murray on Football Focus.

“I think you have to take into consideration the level Bournemouth are at, they aren’t the most forward-thinking team, so he is up there a lot on his own.

“He is comfortable in one-v-one situations.

I think that’s important when you are a lower-league Premier League team.

“Solanke is always in and around.

He has learned his trade in the last couple of years by scoring goals and now it looks like he is ready to make that step into international level.

“He has almost completed the Premier League.

He knows how to score goals at that level and he believes he can week in and week out.”

As the Euros is coming up this summer, many players will be thinking ahead and gunning for a place on their international teams.

Solanke is no different and will be looking to represent his country in his first international tournament.

Granted, Harry Kane will be the first-choice striker for the squad, but, Solanke, Ollie Watkins and Ivan Toney will all be fighting to be his back-up.

If the Bournemouth man can keep up his form, Gareth Southgate is going to have a major headache in regard to which attacker he takes to Germany.
