Harvey Elliott’s Liverpool future appears increasingly uncertain as RB Leipzig intensify their pursuit of the England Under-21 star.
The 22-year-old attacking midfielder finds himself at a crossroads after enduring another frustrating campaign at Anfield, where he managed just 371 minutes of Premier League action across 18 appearances, with both of his starts coming after Arne Slot’s side had already secured the title.
This limited playing time has prompted serious questions about Elliott’s long-term prospects under the Dutch manager, particularly following Liverpool’s summer acquisition of Florian Wirtz for £100 million, which has further reduced opportunities in his preferred positions.
Leipzig’s interest stems from their impending need to replace Xavi Simons, who is expected to complete a £60-70 million move to Chelsea in the coming weeks.
The German club view Elliott as the ideal successor to the Dutch playmaker, with sporting director Marcel Schäfer already engaging in discussions with the player’s representatives.
DaveOCKOP reported earlier this week that Harvey Elliott and his entourage are awaiting a formal offer from RB Leipzig ahead of a proposed move.
The Liverpool man has had positives discussion with the Bundesliga side, with the relationship good during the negotiations.
Now chief reporter at BILD Christian Falk has confirmed that Elliott is seen as the successor to Xavi Simons:
“After suffering from neck pain, Xavi Simons returned to training with the team on Tuesday,” Christian Falk reported for CaughtOffside.
“Leipzig are still open to selling the midfielder for €60m-70m [£52m-60.7m].
His transfer to Chelsea is on hold until the Blues come up with a suitable offer.”
“In that event, Leipzig already have their sights set on a successor in Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott.”
The German reporter added that Jurgen Klopp is expected to assist in the transfer negotiations and RB Leipzig view him internally as their “secret weapon” in these talks:
“Head of global football, Jürgen Klopp, who once coached him in Liverpool, is expected to assist in this endeavour?
He is Leipzig’s secret weapon and is expected to persuade Elliott to join the project.”
The financial framework for any potential deal has become a significant talking point, with Liverpool reportedly valuing Elliott at £40 million plus a buyback clause, or £50 million without such provisions.
This pricing structure reflects the Merseyside club’s confidence in Elliott’s potential while ensuring they retain some control over his future development should he fulfill his considerable promise in Saxony.
