Rafa Benitez’s tenure as Liverpool manager from 2004 to 2010 was marked by memorable highs, including the unforgettable Champions League triumph in 2005, where Liverpool came back from 3-0 down to win on penalties against AC Milan in the final.
Under Benitez, Liverpool also clinched the FA Cup in 2006 and reached the Champions League final again in 2007.
Known for his tactical acumen and meticulous approach, Benitez instilled a sense of resilience and tactical discipline in his teams.
However, inconsistent league performances and disagreements with the club’s owners marred his time at Anfield, leading to his departure in 2010.
Since his lengthy period as Liverpool boss, the Spanish manager has been managing all over, including at Everton and most recently Celta Vigo.
Despite his ties to Liverpool, Benitez joined the blue side of Merseyside ahead of the 2021/22 season, lasting 22 matches before being relieved of his duties.
He would later reveal that he did not see it as a Liverpool betrayal as “so many years had passed” since his Liverpool days and that his family was already still living in the city.
Nevertheless, Benitez was relieved of his duties at Celta Vigo after the club was left in 17th place and two points above the relegation after his last game in charge.
The Spanish club would go on to say that the team “had not obtained the results expected by the club.”
But it seems that the former Liverpool manager could see a quick return to management – and this time far away from Merseyside.
Rafa Benitez reportedly in talks with Sao Paulo
Rafa Benitez is reportedly in talks to take over at Brazilian giants Sao Paulo.
This is according to Brazilian journalist Gabrie Sá (via Sport Witness), who writes that is the Brazilian club that have initiated talks – with negotiations having kicked off on Sunday after consulting agent Giuliano Bertolucci.
Negotiations with Benitez appear promising, as reports suggest the coach ‘likes the project’ and there is ‘optimism’ for a favorable outcome for all parties concerned.
São Paulo enjoyed success last year by winning the Brazilian Cup but faced a setback when manager Dorival Junior departed for the national team.
His replacement, Thiago Carpini, has had a challenging start to the season, prompting speculation about his future.
While Carpini has not been officially dismissed, it comes as no surprise that São Paulo is already exploring options for a new manager.
