Liverpool have let some important players go in the past but some have been more shocking than others.

The way the Reds have conducted their transfer business this summer has been nothing short of sensational, with there being a clear plan in place.

The arrivals have been of the highest quality while anyone who they are willing to sell is up for sale for a reason, mainly as they cannot be guaranteed game time.

However, honesty and communication has not always been so clear at Liverpool, with Arne Slot’s approach a breath of fresh air that players will only surely appreciate.

In the past, managers have not been so clear with their plans, with former left-back John Arne Riise once on the wrong end of this lack of communication.

And, he once explained that under Rafa Benitez, he was denied one last wish before his surprising and rather brutal exit.

Playing just one game for Liverpool is a big enough achievement in itself, so when a player reaches 348, just like Riise did, that is enough to show just how good a player he really was.

The Norwegian was a stalwart at left-back during his time at Anfield and was known for his powerful tackling and hard-hitting shots.

He made that position his own and was a real fan favourite, meaning that when it was announced he was leaving, it came as a surprise to many.

In fact, it even came as a surprise to him, with Riise once telling talkSPORT that even he did not know he was leaving and that Benitez refused to hand him just two more appearances to take him to 350 for Liverpool.

“I was in training and someone called me down and said ‘the boss wants to talk to you,'” Riise said back in May.

“So we sat down and he said ‘OK Johnny’, I had no idea this was going to happen by the way, there was nothing, but he said ‘I think it’s time to go our separate ways.’

“And I was thinking 348 games, seven seasons, won everything, so I said ‘what, why?’

“Then I just asked him, ‘I have 348 games, there’s two games left, can I come in as a sub to make it up to 350’, he said no, no chance.”

That meant that after seven years and five trophies to his name, the left-back was pushed out of the door, eventually moving on to Roma.

Fast forward 17 years and Liverpool have just got another new left-back through the door, this one being Hungarian Milos Kerkez.

Although he is yet to prove he has a shot as powerful as Riise, he has shown similarities with the Norwegian, with Kerkez strong, powerful and having great stamina.

As well as this, when the 21-year-old first joined, he revealed in his first interview that he watched a lot of Riise when he was younger, perhaps modelling his game on the former Red.

Riise was certainly not treated with the respect he should have been but with Slot now in charge, something like this will likely never happen again.
