Everton have reportedly ditched their efforts to to appoint ex-Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez as manager.

The Spaniard who famously won the Champions League with Liverpool, was expected to be appointed as manager of Everton despite still being worshipped at Anfield.

His connection to the red half of the city, meant swathes of Everton supporters were furious with the prospect of the 61-year-old replacing Carlo Ancelotti as manager.

The fury of Everton fans was clear for all to see on Thursday night, after banners were seen outside Goodison Park with a clear message that they did not want Benitez.

The club's owner Farhad Moshiri looked to bring in Benitez following failed talks with former Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo.

One barb by Benitez in particular sticks out though to many Everton fans.

Benitez labelled them a 'small club' following a 0-0 Merseyside derby in February 2007.Everton legend Neville Southall echoed the sentiments of many fans, telling talkSPORT: 'I think Rafa Benitez is a good manager, but is he right for Everton? No. Not a chance.
