It was a year ago that Ralph Hasenhuttl wept after seeing Southampton beat Liverpool.

He could have been forgiven for tears of a different kind as his side was heavily beaten at Anfield.

Liverpool reduced the deficit to leaders Chelsea to a point, Diogo Jota’s first half double supplemented by Thiago Alcantara and Virgil van Dijk goals.

Southampton rallied to keep the score down in the second half, but these are troubling times for their Austrian coach.

The signs for Southampton were not promising early on when a long ball through the centre of their defence seemed to bewilder Mohammed Salisu and Brazilian Lyanco.

Jota’s second on 32 minutes was also from close range, a fine move including Trent Alexander Arnold and Jordan Henderson allowing Salah to cross to the six-yard box where Jota was alone.

In truth, it was a procession by the 35th minute, by which time Liverpool were three-up and Hasenhuttl was ripping up his initial game plan of three centre-halves.
