Rangers manager and Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has questioned Chelsea’s decision to sack Frank Lampard but admits he was ‘not surprised’ to see his former England team-mate lose his job.
Blues legend Lampard was appointed on a three-year contract when he replaced Maurizio Sarri at Stamford Bridge in July 2019.
The former midfielder was sacked on Monday after only 18 months in charge, however, and leaves west London with the club ninth in the Premier League, having won once in their past five league matches.
Gerrard says he is ‘gutted’ and ‘disappointed’ for Lampard and has suggested he deserved more time to turn things around.
The Rangers boss said: ‘I’m gutted for Frank, a friend of mine and someone I respect greatly.

‘I’m disappointed for him, I thought it was a very swift exit on the back of a positive result at the weekend. But I don’t the details, I don’t know the relationships inside the club.
‘But I did think it was an opportunity for Chelsea to reach out and support him during this tough period of results rather than do what they’ve done.
‘But Chelsea have got history for that so it was no surprise.’
