Rangers are interested in signing former Sunderland midfielder Pierre Ekwah but there is currently a sticking point in any deal to bring him to Glasgow.

The Bears have endured a torrid start to the season, despite a mass overhaul of their squad this summer.

Russell Martin was brought in to take over from Duncan Ferguson, and the likes of Oliver Antman and Djeidi Gassama have joined Rangers.

But results have worsened since last season, and the Gers are winless through their first four Premiership games of the 2025/26 season.

And to make matters worse, Rangers endured an embarrassing 9-1 aggregate loss to Club Brugge in their Champions League qualifier, putting a severe dent in the club’s revenue streams this season.

Despite a quiet deadline day so far, the Bears are interested in signing a former Sunderland man in a bid to bolster their midfield.

The Ligue 2 side has no plans to sell Ekwah, but the midfielder wants out following the club’s relegation to France’s second-tier.

However, Rangers and Spanish side Levante are pursuing a deal for the former Black Cat, but the Bears’ move is contingent on them being able to offload a player before the window slams shut.

Football Insider Verdict

Should the Bears look to pursue a deal for Ekwah, the question then becomes about who the club look to sell to make space for the Frenchman’s arrival.

Nico Raskin’s father called out Martin after Rangers’ torrid start to the season, and the midfielder has had interest for much of the summer.

The Belgium international has often been left out by the ex-Southampton boss since arriving in Scotland, and it would be no surprise to see him depart.

Meanwhile, Mohamed Diomande has been linked with an exit from Rangers, although Martin would like to keep the Ivorian, Mick Brown told Football Insider exclusively.

Should he make the move to Glasgow, Ekwah will need to produce instantly in a volatile environment, and may find himself playing under a new boss should results continue as they have.
