Rangers could soon confirm the departure of centre-back Ben Davies as they look to wrap up a deal for a new player in his position from Real Betis.

Davies has been unable to live up to the lofty expectations set of him when he made a £3million [BBC] move to Rangers from Liverpool back in 2022.

The centre-back never actually played a competitive game for the Reds, but was expected to join the Ibrox outfit and become a key man at the back as they competed with Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title.

He featured 38 times in all competitions in his debut campaign, but then struggled in 2023/24 and soon moved on loan to League One side Birmingham City last summer, after Football Insider had revealed that Davies was doing a medical with the Blues ahead of the switch.

The 30-year-old was a key man under Chris Davies as the Second City outfit cruised back to the Championship, but his decent form in the English third-tier has not thrust him into Russell Martin’s plans for this season at Rangers, and an exit now looks to be imminent as the Glasgow giants close in on a new signing.

According to French outlet L’Equipe, the Gers are soon set to complete the signing of young Real Betis centre-back Nobel Mendy on a four-year contract in a deal worth €3m (£2.6m).

Their report states that Mendy’s contract will also include a 20% sell-on clause due to Betis if he is sold on for profit, so it is clear he is highly-rated by the Spanish side despite them selling him and him being just 20-years-old.

Mendy has made just six first-team appearances for the Sevilla-based club up to now in his career, but even though he is inexperienced, Rangers are surely not set to spend such an amount on a player, especially a central defender, just to not play him.

With that said, his arrival is surely set to spell the end of Davies’ career at Ibrox, with the 30-year-old yet to even feature under new boss Martin in the early stages of this season.

He is set to be pushed even further down the pecking order by Mendy, and Football Insider recently revealed that Birmingham have had a bid accepted to sign Davies permanently, and so a move is already on the horizon.

Davies has always lacked the physicality to play in the Scottish Premiership, and has simply looked unsuited to the league across his time at the club by consistently being a part of a shaky backline no matter who he has been paired with at the back.

His future has been up in the air for a long time at the Glasgow giants, and this now looks like the final nail in the coffin to put an end to a tough three-year spell.

Davies’ time at Rangers has obviously had an adverse effect on his career and how he is viewed by potential suitors, but the level of expectation at Ibrox is always high, and he has quite simply never been up to the task there.

With that said, he is clearly still a decent player and suitable centre-back for the Championship, as shown by his impressive exploits at Blues last term, as well as the part he played in Sheffield United’s run to the play-offs in 2021/22.

The 30-year-old looked to have found somewhat of a home at St.

Andrews, and it would make a lot of sense if he returned there this summer.

Chris Davies has outlined his desire to have his namesake Ben back at the Blues this summer, and given that they only have three senior, recognised players in that position right now, it seems like a no-brainer for the former Liverpool man to push for a move back to the Second City.
