Rasmus Hojlund reacted to a fitness update from Man United teammate Lisandro Martinez on social media.

The 27-year-old made the move to Old Trafford in 2022, joining his ex-Ajax boss Erik ten Hag in the north of England.

But whilst the Dutchman is but a distant memory in Manchester, Martinez remains.

The Argentine defender has been an important member of United’s backline since joining the club, and his fearless attitude on the pitch and friendly persona off it have endeared him to his side’s fanbase.

Erik ten Hag was sacked last year.

However, Martinez endured one of his most difficult seasons yet after suffering an ACL tear in February.

Whilst the wonders of modern medicine have turned the injury from a career-ender into a prolonged, yet recoverable absence, it is no mean feat getting back to form after recovery.

On his road to recovery, Martinez shared several images of himself on Instagram from the club’s pre-season tour in Chicago.

The South American seems to be enjoying his time in North America, and the post on social media was captioned: “Taking steps towards the objective.” With a “soon” emoji.

Hojlund reacted to the post by liking it, showing his support for Martinez.

Football Insider Verdict

The grim reality with injuries in football is that, even if you do recover and reach your pre-injury form, there is no guarantee your club will stick with you.

Martinez seemed an irreplaceable part of Man United’s backline before his injury, but there are some uncomfortable truths to confront for the defender.

Firstly, he was not bought by Ruben Amorim or Jim Ratcliffe.

Secondly, the club have some serious stars coming through at the position, whom the Red Devils will be keen to not impede.

Ayden Heaven and last summer’s marquee signing Leny Yoro both occupy Martinez’s position, and unless he is able to do something seriously impressive on his return, the 27-year-old may have to settle for a back-up role.
