Manchester City has confirmed the signing of Rayan Cherki, ending any possibility of the former Lyon star joining Liverpool this summer.
The 21-year-old was linked with Liverpool before it became apparent that City was leading the race for his signature.
That inevitably took the Reds’ attention away from Cherki, with City then stepping in to make its play, resulting in the French international moving to the Etihad Stadium on a five-year deal in a deal worth an initial $42.5 million.
City themselves had been linked with Wirtz as well before pulling out of the race and turning its attention to Cherki, with the attacking midfielder explaining why he came to the decision to move to the Etihad despite his meeting Slot.
“This is a dream for me,” Cherki told City’s media after signing.
Arne Slot was reported to have held a meeting with Rayan Cherki before his move to Manchester City.
I love this sport, and I can’t wait to develop further here in Manchester with Pep [Guardiola] and his backroom staff.
“Everyone knows how good City are – they have been so successful for many years now
The responsibility to help the team continue winning is something I want to embrace.
“I would only leave Lyon for a project I really believe in and everything at City suggests I can develop my game and help the team be successful in the future.
“I can’t wait to show City fans what I can do.”
