For most Liverpool fans, the mere mention of Real Madrid is enough to spoil the mood.
Plenty of supporters expressed their outrage through a mixture of disappointment, anger, and a strong sense of betrayal.
Many of the Anfield faithful took issue with the manner of his exit – running down his contract to join Real Madrid for nothing.
It also seemed to suggest that it was an engineered move, planned for months or even years.
But unfortunately for Liverpool fans, it seems there is another saga in waiting involving Real Madrid.
Ibrahima Konate and the club are currently at an impasse regarding a new deal, with the Frenchman ticking into the final year of his deal.
Konate’s current contract, signed in 2021 for a weekly wage of around £80,000, runs until June 30, 2026, but fresh terms proposed by the club have failed to satisfy his camp.
Despite talks having progressed in late May, the two parties remain divided over remuneration structure.
Liverpool’s offer is understood to lean heavily on performance-related bonuses, whereas Konate and his representatives are seeking a substantially higher guaranteed salary – reportedly in the region of £200,000 per week.
The Frenchman’s camp has expressed disappointment with the balance of incentives versus base pay, prompting the defender to reject the opening proposal.
And Real Madrid are sitting up and taking notice.
According to Caught Offside, Real Madrid are understood to be ready to “accelerate” their pursuit this summer, although they are only willing to offer up to £25 million.
Paris Saint-Germain have also been monitoring the situation, keeping their options open should Konate continue to rebuff Liverpool’s contract advances.
With just one year remaining on his deal, Liverpool may feel compelled to entertain bids rather than risk losing him for free in 2026.
The Reds would want Konate for £40 million according to the report but could be forced to accept a lower fee if they wish to avoid a Bosman departure.
It would be a very bruising blow to lose yet another world-class player to Real Madrid, but it is a possibility that Liverpool fans should be aware of.
The situation is one to keep an eye on, as both the player and club will not want contract noise heading into the 2025/26 campaign.
