Fabrizio Romano has provided the latest update on the future of Ibrahima Konate and the interest from Real Madrid.

Konate’s future has been one of the major talking points among Liverpool fans in the last few days.

The French defender has entered the final year of his contract, and despite ongoing talks with Liverpool, there appears to be little headway in reaching an agreement over a new deal.

Aware of the situation, Spanish La Liga giants Real Madrid are sniffing around, hoping to sign Konate for free.

In fact, a recent report from Spain claimed that Konate has decided he will not renew his contract at Liverpool as he is keen on joining Real Madrid.

Liverpool lost Trent Alexander-Arnold to the same situation this summer, and recent reports indicate that the Anfield hierarchy is growing increasingly anxious that the same situation will repeat itself with Konate.

The club have now decided they will be open to cashing in on Konate if he refuses to renew and the right offer comes.

As it stands, there is no indication that Real Madrid will be willing to pay for Konate.

So far, no other club has been named as a potential taker, and Real Madrid are said to be only willing to sign Konate for free in 2026.

Amid the series of reports linking Konate with a potential move to Real Madrid, reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed the extent of the interest.

“We can confirm that Real Madrid are working on a deal to sign Ibrahima Konate for the summer of 2026 on a free transfer,” the journalist told DAZN Football.

“Similar to the Trent Alexander-Arnold situation, Real Madrid are really interested in the player.

They already had some contact to understand the situation of the player.

Real Madrid are very attentive to the situation.”

Romano went on to clarify that despite the interest from Madrid, the Spanish club are yet to submit any bid or reach any agreements.

“But at the moment, there is no proposal,” he added.

“There is nothing official, also because the player is still a Liverpool player.

Real Madrid will respect that.

“But their interest is there.

So for sure Madrid always monitor this kind of situations with player side of contract and Konate is one of them.

“It will also depend on Liverpool because at some point around October, November, the agreement for his contract was very close?

Then the situation changed again between Liverpool and Konate.

“At this point the agreement is not close at all, and this is why Real Madrid are attentive to the situation.

“Then lets see what is going to happen in the next weeks between Konate and Liverpool because eventually they are complications, Liverpool decide to sell the player this summer, for Real Madrid, it could be a last minute opportunity.”
