Florian Wirtz was seen as one of the best signings of the summer transfer window by many.

However, his time with Liverpool so far has been far from ideal, with the 22-year-old failing to live up to the standards he set last season.

And now, due to his lack of form, questions are being asked about whether the German was worth the Reds spending £100million on in the first place, with Richard Keys being left baffled by a claim from former Liverpool midfielder Jason McAteer about the performances of Wirtz.

The German still has plenty of time to get adjusted to life at Liverpool, of course, but since he could end up costing Liverpool £116million, you’d have expected to see more from him.

“I wouldn’t say he’s [Wirtz] been anonymous, I would just say again he probably emphasises Liverpool performance as a whole, patchy,” McAteer said.

“He’s played in patches, his quality is there to be seen when he’s having his good little spells.”

To which Richard Keys asked: “Really?

I saw plenty of it last year.”

McAteer then replied: “He had four or five really good opportunities against Atletico Madrid.

“I’m not disagreeing with you, in certain games you’d have expected a little bit more from him in certain games, but you can see his balance, creativity, the way he gets into little pockets, it’s not his fault that Liverpool don’t sometimes serve him.”

Ever since Wirtz arrived at Anfield, he’s been used as the most advanced midfielder of the three within Liverpool’s team.
