Chris Sutton picks player Liverpool signed for less than £10m over Manchester United’s Harry Maguire

Liverpool and Manchester United will be eager to get back to business following the international break.

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds, who were knocked out by Erik ten Hag’s Red Devils in the FA Cup, will want to push on in pursuit of the Premier League title.

Meanwhile, Manchester United will be eager to do all they can to stake a late claim for a top-four finish and a Champions League spot.

However, with Euro 2024 on the horizon, there will no doubt be a lot of discussion about which players – including from Liverpool and Man United – will be in the England squad come June.

BBC Sport has now published an article speculating which players could start England’s opener against Serbia on 16 June.

While Manchester United’s Harry Maguire is likely to be a shoo-in at the back, Chris Sutton would actually prefer Liverpool’s Joe Gomez to play alongside John Stones.

“Gareth Southgate will pick Harry Maguire if he’s fit,” wrote Sutton. “But I have been really impressed by Joe Gomez this season, wherever he has played in Liverpool’s defence, and I want to pick him.”

Could Liverpool ace Joe Gomez start ahead of Manchester United man Harry Maguire for England?

Maguire’s form has picked up again this season, with the £80million man featuring regularly when fit. However, he has also missed a lot of games due to injury.

Meanwhile, Gomez has kicked on massively this term, and he has also been featuring in a variety of positions.

Versatility is a great asset when it comes to picking a fairly small squad, so that should stand the £4million man in good stead for the Euros.

However, when it comes to starting in the finals, Maguire will certainly have the edge over Gomez.

The Man United man has 63 England caps, compared to 13 for the Liverpool ace, so the former is vastly more experienced, and Southgate clearly rates him highly.

Both are likely to be in the squad, but when it comes to the starting XI, Maguire is almost assured to be in alongside John Stones if both are fit.
