Reds close to centre-back signing and 'unbelievable' star set to depart: Wednesday's Liverpool transfer round-up

Liverpool are gearing up for a busy end to the transfer window.

The Reds appear to be trying to finish the summer the same way in which they started it by getting a few top deals over the line in quick succession.

A few additions are still needed despite the heavy spending so far, although the need for new arrivals will only increase after making the sales they are also expected to carry out.

August has been a busy month so far and the ending could be one for the ages, with this transfer window having the potential to be one of Liverpool’s best of all time.

The Reds are in need of reinforcements at both ends of the pitch, but it appears as though their priorities lie in building from the back.

A new centre-back, whether that becomes plural is yet to be seen, was high up on the agenda, and Wednesday has seen them come close to an agreement for Parma defender Giovanni Leoni.

The 18-year-old is held in high regard throughout Italy and already has first-team experience, meaning Liverpool could have a huge prospect on their hands.

The Italian is seen as the heir to Virgil van Dijk’s throne and after a few years as his understudy, he might just be ready to make a real name for himself.

Despite previous reports stating that Federico Chiesa has been asked by Arne Slot to stay at Anfield for at least another season due to a lack of options, it seems as though the Italian will still be leaving.

According to journalist Lewis Steele, Chiesa will likely leave in the final week of the transfer window, with a return back to Italy his most likely destination.

Many clubs have previously enquired about his availability, but the combination of his wage demands and poor injury record have put most off thus far.

Leaving so late in the window is far from ideal given the fact there will be virtually no time to find a replacement if Liverpool see fit, although they may have already planned ahead.

Last but not least, Alexander Isak’s proposed move to Liverpool appears closer than ever after Newcastle have, firstly, entered the race for Jean-Philippe Mateta.

As well as this, journalist David Lynch believes that all the signs are positive for the Reds and the transfer is now only a matter of time.

The whole Isak saga does not sit right with Jamie Carragher, however, with the former defender believing he is not really needed, while Sam Allardyce believes it is time for Newcastle to sell.

Elsewhere, Marc Guehi rumours would suggest Ibrahima Konate is departing Liverpool soon, while ex-Red Fabio Borini believes that Mohamed Salah should win the PFA Player of the Year award.
