Chelsea defender Reece James has revealed that he has found the news of a departure from Stamford Bridge tough to take.

Enzo Maresca has started the new season well, as Chelsea defeated West London rivals Fulham 2-0 on Saturday, 30 August.

The Blues were held to a 0-0 draw by Crystal Palace on the Premier League’s opening weekend, but subsequently enjoyed consecutive wins over West Ham United and Fulham.

Meanwhile, Maresca was busy in the transfer market, with Facundo Buonanotte joining Chelsea from Brighton before deadline day.

Amid the Stamford Bridge club’s late transfer activity, Ben Chilwell joined French club Strasbourg, who are also owned by BlueCo.

In response to the left back’s exit, James wrote on his Instagram story on Wednesday, 3 September: “My boy man.

Stay well brother and good luck with your next chapter!”

As mentioned in James’ message to his former Chelsea colleague, Chilwell’s time with Chelsea was plagued by injuries.

However, when the former Leicester City defender was fit, he enjoyed success with the West Londoners, helping them win the 2021 Champions League title.

Meanwhile, Chilwell spent the second half of last season on loan with Crystal Palace, scoring in a 4-2 win over Wolves in his final appearance for the Eagles.

The presence of Marc Cucurella has made the 21-cap England international surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge in recent seasons, while his move to Strasbourg can hand him a new lease of life.

Under Liam Rosenior’s stewardship, the Ligue 1 club finished seventh in the French top flight last season and have won two of their first three league games this season.

Rosenior’s exploits suggest that he can help Chilwell reestablish his best form if he is given regular game time in Ligue 1.
