Referee hits back at Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp after laughing with Real Madrid

Liverpool are on the brink of a Champions League exit following a dismal reverse at Real Madrid on Tuesday night.

Mohamed Salah's away goal has at least given the Reds some hope after they slumped to a poor 3-1 defeat against the Spanish side.

The result means Jurgen Klopp’s side have it all to do when the return leg takes place next Wednesday.

But there was plenty that went unnoticed or under the radar during the 90 minutes at the Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium.

Brych hits back

Klopp wasn't particularly taken with the standard of officiating from compatriot Felix Brych in the Spanish capital.

The Reds boss had words with the referee as they walked off together following the final whistle, accusing him of being "unfair" to Sadio Mane after a seemingly red-card offence on the Senegalese by Lucas Vazquez went unpunished.

Brych, though, was having none of it.

"What you're doing now is unfair too," he responded to Klopp before the pair disappeared down the tunnel.

Referee a Real comedian

Mind you, Brych can count himself a touch fortunate.

Klopp might have been fuming even more had he witnessed what happened in the tunnel before the second half.

As the teams came out to restart the match, Brych was spotted smiling and joking with the Real Madrid players.

Maybe they were laughing about the Mane incident.

Klopp keeps the peace

Klopp had enough reason to be agitated without the input of the referee, so poor was Liverpool's performance for huge parts of the game.

However, he wasn't always spiky on the touchline.

Trent Alexander-Arnold was less than impressed when getting a shove in the back from Vinicius Junior and went to face up to the Real Madrid striker.

Klopp, though, swiftly intervened and acted as peacemaker before any real trouble could flare.

Kabak prompts reaction

Ozan Kabak was perhaps one of the few Liverpool players to emerge with any sort of credit, given the manner in which he kept Karim Benzema at bay on numerous occasions.

But there was one moment that caused real concern when the centre-back's attempted ball to Alisson Becker was woefully underhit and allowed Marco Asensio in.

Fortunately, the chance wasn't converted as the Real Madrid man's shot ended up being diverted wide by the goalkeeper.

On the touchline, though, Klopp could be spotted with his head in his hands as the incident unfolded. It was that kind of night for Liverpool.
