Emile Smith Rowe could be joined at Fulham by an ex-teammate after his role in his side’s draw with Manchester United.

Reiss Nelson spent last season on loan at Fulham after falling down the pecking order at the Emirates, but returned to Arsenal well ahead of schedule following hamstring surgery after an injury in December.

Fulham‘s transfer business this summer had been sluggish to say the least, with back-up goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte’s £500,000 arrival from Montpellier their only addition with a week of the window left.

Former Man United scout Mick Brown told Football Insider on 4 August that Fulham will look to re-sign Nelson before the deadline with an agreement close, but he remains an Arsenal player for the time being.

Fulham’s continued stalling on a deal to sign Nelson comes after their interest in Shakhtar Donetsk winger Kevin emerged, but time is running out for Marco Silva to address the deficiencies in his squad.

Silva therefore named a familiar side for Man United‘s visit to Craven Cottage on 24 August, as Fulham held the Red Devils to a 1-1 draw after a missed Bruno Fernandes penalty and a controversial opener.

Smith Rowe was brought off the bench with Fulham 1-0 down to Leny Yoro‘s goal, and the ex-Arsenal star made an immediate impact to equalise inside two minutes and seal back-to-back draws for Fulham.

The 25-year-old posted on Instagram at full-time after his first-time finish at the near post from Alex Iwobi‘s cross, and having rescued a point for Fulham, Smith Rowe said: “We keep fighting”.

Nelson responded as speculation over a possible return to Fulham continues, with the out-of-favour Arsenal winger calling Smith Rowe; “My boy”.

Football Insider Verdict

Although Fulham’s first two matches of the new season have seen them come from behind to secure hard-earned points, turning draws into victories will only become more difficult if the side isn’t improved.

Rodrigo Muniz‘s last-ditch equaliser against Brighton comes against a backdrop of interest from Serie A side Atalanta, but both they and newly-promoted Leeds United have seen £30million–plus bids rejected.

Fulham are yet to raise any money from sales this summer meaning Lecomte’s £500,000 move leaves them in the red, and it remains to be seen if Nelson’s potential switch will trigger a late surge of transfer activity.
