Ruben Amorim has been given plenty to think about as concerns emerge over Bruno Fernandes’ captaincy at Man United.

Fernandes has already been warned of sanctions over the potential introduction of ref cams in the Premier League, with the 30-year-old well known across the sport for wearing his heart on his sleeve.

The Portuguese star has been heavily involved throughout the Summer Series in America, notching three goals and an assist during games against West Ham, Bournemouth, and Everton.

While he was back on the scoresheet against the Toffees on Sunday, 3 August, his actions off the ball caught the eye of many after clashing with opposition star Iliman Ndiaye on the halfway line.

This article contains exclusive comments from ex-PGMOL chief, FIFA official and former professional referee Keith Hackett.

As the Merseysiders were celebrating an equaliser in the final 15 minutes of the 2-2 draw, thanks to a combination of Amad Diallo and Ayden Heaven, the main focus was back at the halfway line.

After Fernandes attempted to wipe Ndiaye out, the Senegalese international took issue with the captain’s challenge, squaring up to him until a number of teammates broke up the scuffle.

While the United man is rarely one to talk himself into a sending-off, receiving only five red cards in his career, concerns have emerged over his ability to wear the armband at Old Trafford next season.

Daniel Farke is facing a similar situation over Ethan Ampadu’s role at Leeds United for the 2025/26 campaign.

Hackett spoke exclusively to Football Insider about his concerns over Fernandes after clashing with the Everton star, saying, “He is renowned for confrontation with referees.

I question whether, in fact, from a Manchester United point of view, the right selection as captain, particularly under the new remit.

But other than the direction of play at the start of the game or who is going to kick off, that’s the only decision the captain makes.

“Therefore, the selection of the team captain and his approach to the referee will be important.
