Despite being incredibly active in the transfer market this summer, Liverpool are not finished yet.

The Reds have made four major signings so far, just one shy of the total number of additions since the summer of 2023.

While that represents a very busy summer indeed at Anfield, it is clear that Liverpool need even more to complete their squad.

The Reds are poised to bid for Alexander Isak in what would be a British record transfer, while they are in desperate need of a new centre-back too.

Having sold Jarell Quansah, Liverpool are looking for a young defender who can step into his role in the squad.

As a result, Parma centre-back Giovanni Leoni is one of the players to have been mentioned.

And as Liverpool continue to assess their options, Leoni has reportedly been ‘reserved’ for a move.

Leoni emerged as one of the best young defenders in Europe last season, impressing under Christian Chivu at Parma.

But with Chivu having since filled the vacant managerial position at Inter Milan, Leoni’s future with the Yellow and Blues has come under scrutiny.

According to Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport, Chivu is trying to sign his former player at San Siro.

The Romanian has reportedly earmarked Leoni as his only target for strengthening the defence this summer.

It is said to be ‘him and him alone’.

However, Inter cannot move immediately to sign Leoni, as they need to raise funds through player sales.

With the defender said to be commanding a £30m fee, it is not small change for the Champions League finalists.

Parma are reportedly happy to do business with their Serie A rivals, though, and as a result, Leoni is claimed to be ‘effectively reserved’ for Inter until they can raise the funds.

Parma will supposedly not wait forever, however, with Liverpool said to be one of the teams who could quickly move ahead in their interest.

As Liverpool try and find the right signing at centre-back, Leoni has to be in their thinking.

The price isn’t ridiculous, he has plenty of time to develop and should be happy to come in as a back-up.

What is clear is that the Reds cannot hang around too long as they weigh up which direction to go in, though.

Leoni will seemingly be taken off the market by Inter very soon, so they’re going to have to move quickly.

Other targets may also become unavailable as the season draws closer.

As Saturday’s friendly with AC Milan demonstrated, Liverpool are badly short at centre-back.
