Gyokeres has netted 54 goals in 52 games this season and would likely cost between £80m-£100m, a fee that Atletico would not pay unless he was a guaranteed starter.
Although capable of playing alongside Alvarez, signing the Swede would mean they have four out-and-out strikers at the club, making selling one highly likely.
Liverpool are in the market for a striker and still expect to have the funds after the Wirtz deal goes through.
With the Argentine high up on their shortlist, Atletico’s moves in the market will therefore be something the club keeps a close eye on.
Liverpool have been linked with a plethora of forward options and desperately want a striker, with Hugo Eketike a top target.
The Frenchman has 22 goals and 12 assists for Frankfurt this season, but his £84m price tag has put not only Liverpool off, but Arsenal too.
Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko are two other options, but both would command a similar fee, while their original target of Alexander Isak is no longer available after Newcastle confirmed he will be staying.
A new number nine is what many fans dream of as they are like a shiny new toy, and it looks like Liverpool will be going all-out to get one before the new season starts.
