Real Madrid and Barcelona have joined Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign Borussia Monchengladbach defender Matthias Ginter, according to Sky Germany.

Ginter played his way onto the shortlists of a number of top clubs with his performances at Euro 2020. The 27-year-old started all four of Germany’s games at the tournament to build on a strong Bundesliga campaign.

Marco Rose started Ginter in each of Gladbach’s fixtures across all competitions, totalling 46 appearances. He also helped the Borussia-Park outfit keep seven Bundesliga clean sheets, including against RB Leipzig and Wolfsburg, and occasionally captained the side.

But Ginter is now in the final year of his contract, to the appeal of Liverpool and Tottenham, per Bild. The German publication noted in May that Spurs had even already tabled an offer to Borussia Monchengladbach for the centre-half.

Gladbach must sell Ginter this summer if he refuses to sign a new deal, and could cash in on interest from Spain’s big three. Barcelona contacted the North Rhine-Westphalia outfit during Euro 2020 to discuss his situation with a view to replacing Clement Lenglet.

Real Madrid are also keen as they look to replace Sergio Ramos. While Atletico Madrid have made enquiries to check the £54,000-per-week brute’s availability. The La Liga champions also have the most financial clout among Spain’s top clubs for a deal.

Yet they could face competition from German and Italian heavyweights, as well. AC Milan are monitoring Ginter, while Bayer Leverkusen have held concrete talks with Gladbach. They are also willing to pay €20m (£17m).

Gladbach must save money due to the pandemic and are yet to table a new contract. But it cannot be ruled out that Ginter stays put to leave for free in 2022.

Ginter would be a bargain for Liverpool or Tottenham this summer, despite the vast rival interest from across Europe. Borussia Monchengladbach cannot hold out for a significant sum due to his contract situation and their pandemic-induced financial problems.

Liverpool may not need Ginter any longer after signing Ibrahima Konate, however. While Tottenham are also prioritising Atalanta’s Cristian Romero, but Calciomercato note they must pay €40m (£34.5m). Considerably more than the German star may be available for.

Ginter would also offer Jurgen Klopp or Nuno Espirito Santo consistency and versatility in their respective sides next season. The 44-cap international is naturally a centre-half, but can also perform at right-back or in a deep-lying midfield role.
