Liverpool are prepared to be ruthless this summer and sell players deemed surplus to requirements.

The Reds are about to take their summer spending to well over £200m after they announce the signing of Hugo Ekitike, suggesting outgoings are the next port of call.

Although many of their players have been linked with a move away for a few months now, they have only sold two key players thus far, these being Jarell Quansah and Caoimhin Kelleher.

Federico Chiesa is just one player who appears to be closer to the Anfield exit than most, with speculation only growing further after he was left out of the pre-season tour squad for Asia.

The Italian certainly is not short of interest despite his rather torrid time on Merseyside so far, and his future could now be decided by a former Everton player.

Knock-on effects happen so often in football as, obviously, when clubs sell one of their star players, they need to find a replacement.

In this case Italian side Atalanta are very likely to lose former Everton winger Ademola Lookman this summer, with the Englishman already agreeing personal terms with Inter Milan.

MORE LIVERPOOL STORIES

Despite being set to receive a fee in the region of €50 (£43m) for him, SportItalia have exclusively revealed that they are keen to replace him with Chiesa and are willing to pay €12m (£10.4m) to prise him away from Liverpool.

Whether the Reds make a profit is yet to be seen if they decide to sell him at this price as Chiesa was originally signed for £10m plus £2.5m in add-ons based on team performances.

And, with Liverpool winning the league, it is very likely that at least some of those add-ons were achieved, suggesting they would be making a loss.

Chiesa is said to be open to a move away but not actively pushing for one at this moment in time, although with the World Cup fast approaching, he might choose to depart to ensure he gives himself the best chance of making the Italy squad.

Although Chiesa has been dropped from the pre-season tour, some reports suggest that it is due to injury and not because he is not part of Arne Slot’s plans.

With that being said, ability has never really been his problem, staying fit has been, something he needs to try and improve to salvage what is left of his Liverpool career.

However, with Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez likely to leave, Chiesa could get more chances to prove himself than he has in the past, meaning he has the potential to become a vital squad player.

Due to the amount of games the Reds will play next season too, rotation will be vital to keep the team fresh as they look to win every trophy available, again proving why he should stick around for a little while longer.

He is certainly a bit of a fan favourite at Anfield and his song can be heard ringing around the ground even when he sits on the bench, so maybe he should give it one last shot.
