Florian Wirtz is one of the best players in football, with the Bayer Leverkusen star believed to be a target for Liverpool.
The Germany international has been key to Xabi Alonso’s success with the Bundesliga side with Wirtz now on Liverpool’s radar heading into the summer, though the Reds face competition from the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City.
Although Leverkusen failed to reclaim their Bundesliga title, Wirtz has been as good as he ever has for the German side, with the 22-year-old attacking midfielder scoring 16 goals and registering 13 assists in all competitions.
Yet with the summer transfer window just around the corner, Wirtz has now told Alonso which team he wants to join, and it’s not Liverpool.

According to Sport Bild, Wirtz has alerted Leverkusen that he wants to join Bayern Munich this summer, with the Bavarian giants once again Bundesliga champions having missed out on the top prize in Germany last season.
Vincent Kompany has been hugely impressive in his first year as Bayern manager as the former Burnley coach managed to lead the European giants back to the Bundesliga title, with Wirtz seemingly impressed with what he’s seen this season.
Bayern have long found success in scooping up the biggest and best players in Germany during their reign of dominance in the country, with Wirtz now set to become the latest name to leave a Bundesliga side for the Allianz Arena side.

As a result, Liverpool could have to rethink one of their summer strategies, with Wirtz a player who could have been a sensation at Anfield had the Reds managed to strike a deal with Leverkusen for the 22-year-old superstar.
Liverpool are likely to make a superstar signing this summer, with Wirtz the sort of player that would have suited what the Reds are looking for given his exceptional goal contribution record for Leverkusen and his age.
Yet even with these factors, Wirtz heading to Liverpool always felt like a long shot, especially with the likes of Bayern interested in the German international, coupled with Leverkusen’s demands for the attacking midfielder.
Indeed, Liverpool will have other superstar targets in mind this summer, and losing out on Wirtz won’t feel like the worst miss in the world given what the Anfield side actually need from the market this year.
