Liverpool are running out of days in which to sign a new attacker as they risk leaving themselves short this season.
The Reds have had a very good summer transfer window on the whole, but the work of Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards could yet be unravelled.
Having sold Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez, and lost Diogo Jota in tragic circumstances, Liverpool have brought in only Hugo Ekitike.
Clearly, this is not enough for a season in which the Reds are expected to challenge on four fronts under Arne Slot.
As a result, Liverpool are still aiming to sign at least one more attacker, with Alexander Isak the clear preference at Anfield.
But Newcastle are digging their heels in over Isak, and it is looking increasingly unlikely that the Swede will end up as part of the Liverpool squad.
And, as fate would have it, a former Reds hero is set to become available.

Even in the halcyon days of peak Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah, Liverpool tended to have at least five forward options.
During those times, Divock Origi was often the man brought in to fill the void when any of Jurgen Klopp’s main men were missing.

Origi became a cult hero at Anfield after scoring some enormous goals, notably in the 2018/19 Champions League campaign where he notched in both the semi-final and final.
After leaving the Reds for AC Milan in 2022, though, things have turned sour for Origi.
The Belgian has not played for Milan since June 2023, and after a year of complete inactivity, is now set to depart.

That’s according to Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport, who claim that Origi is now ‘very close’ to reaching an agreement with Milan over the early termination of his contract.
The former Liverpool man has reportedly been working alone and did not even visit Milanello, the Milan training centre, throughout the 2024/25 campaign.
Despite having one year left to run on his contract, Origi will reportedly be paid around half the remainder of his salary to leave the club early.
After leaving Liverpool in search of more regular first team football, it is a real shame how Origi’s career has ultimately played out.
Still only 30, the Belgium international could yet re-emerge at a decent level in European football.
But after two years of barely playing at all, it is hard to see exactly where Origi could end up.
What can safely be said is that, despite their need to bring in a forward, there is no chance Liverpool come back in for Origi at this stage.
He may be a legend to some at the club, but his time has passed, and as they target a potential dynasty, Liverpool must look elsewhere.
