Trent Alexander-Arnold has confirmed his exit from Liverpool this week, with all signs pointing towards the defender joining Real Madrid.

The England international will this summer call time on his 20-year stay with the Reds having won two Premier League titles, a UEFA Champions League and numerous domestic honours, with Alexander-Arnold firmly establishing himself as a modern Liverpool legend.

One factor about the fullback’s departure that is unique this summer is when the 26-year-old will officially become a Los Blancos player, with Madrid keen to sign Alexander-Arnold for the FIFA Club World Cup, a tournament that takes place before the right-back’s contract with Liverpool expires.

And such a move could be quite financially beneficial for Liverpool this summer beyond receiving a transfer fee.

According to the Athletic, Liverpool could save as much as £900,000 if Alexander-Arnold were to join Madrid one month before his contract expires, with the defender currently earning a base salary of £200,000-a-week as well as bonuses with the Reds.

Coupled with Madrid potentially paying an £850,000 transfer fee to sign Alexander-Arnold early, then Liverpool could end up pocketing £1.75m for Alexander-Arnold’s departure, a small fee for a Premier League giant but still something nonetheless.

Indeed, Madrid are intent on having Alexander-Arnold on their books for the Club World Cup, a competition that Los Blancos are keen to win given the huge prize money rewards that are on offer from the tournament.

And with Madrid without a natural right-back or a playmaking powerhouse, there’s every reason to believe that Alexander-Arnold could be playing for the Spanish giants in next month’s tournament, especially if Liverpool stand to benefit financially from the move.

Alexander-Arnold’s departure has split the Liverpool fanbase down the middle, with some supporters viewing the defender as a modern-day great whilst others believe the fullback has turned his back on the back when they’re at an unexpected high.

Yet for Liverpool as a club, they know keeping hold of the defender until his contract expires on June 30th benefits nobody, with Madrid keen to confirm the deal before the Club World Cup stars as the Reds stand to bank some money for the academy graduate.

With just three Premier League games left to play, there’s a real chance that Alexander-Arnold could be confirmed as a Madrid player in the days following the end of the season, where preparing for the Club World Cup will become a new priority for the defender as a Los Blancos figure.
