Report: Liverpool are now thinking about signing a defender who is a 'natural leader'

Liverpool managed to secure two victories over Athletic Bilbao in their final pre-season fixtures before the Community Shield against Crystal Palace at Wembley.

The Reds looked fluid in attack as they scored seven goals, with several of their summer signings impressing.

Darwin Nunez, who appears to be edging closer to the exit door, also managed to get on the scoresheet.

While Liverpool fans can be encouraged by the attacking display at Anfield, there may be some concerns in defence for Arne Slot, as he confirmed he is likely to be without Joe Gomez and Conor Bradley for their season opener.

Captain Virgil Van Dijk was also missing, and this has led to thoughts about adding another recruit at the back, someone who could potentially replace the Dutchman as the leader in the team.

It has been reported in GiveMeSport that Liverpool are now interested in bringing the Brentford captain to Liverpool.

The decision to monitor Nathan Collins seems like a no-brainer, with the defender being the only other player to play every single minute of the Premier League campaign last year alongside Virgil Van Dijk.

He has recently been named Brentford captain, having already had that honour for Ireland at just the age of 24.

Liverpool were known under Jurgen Klopp for signing leaders who can help lead the team through tough moments, being players who would stand up when it mattered most, and it looks like this is set to continue under Slot.

Signing Collins may be a long-term solution for Van Dijk, who has just turned 34, as both a first-team regular and captain.

Liverpool had previously been linked for a long time this summer with Crystal Palace captain, Marc Guehi.

The England international had been linked to a move to Anfield, but they did not wish to overspend on the defender.

However, as per the Times, it is believed that Newcastle are willing to spend over £50 million on the Crystal Palace captain, hijacking any sort of deal Liverpool were looking to secure.

This has seen Liverpool turn their attention to Collins, with the Ireland international considered more affordable, with the Brentford man believed to be valued at £23 million.
