Liverpool considering 47-year-old manager who Thierry Henry labelled a ‘genius’ for his tactics

Liverpool’s search for a new manager is ramping up as the months dwindle down to Jurgen Klopp stepping away.

The Reds had hoped to appoint Xabi Alonso as their new gaffer but the Spaniard has confirmed he will stay in Germany with Bayer Leverkusen.

That leaves Liverpool looking elsewhere, with a number of managers reportedly being of interest to FSG and Michael Edwards.

Alonso’s commitment to Bayer is a blow for Liverpool. But like everything in football, the club will simply move forward and look at the next best option.

With that in mind, The Athletic today reports on a fresher name being linked with the job.

With Alonso out of the picture now, there are others being considered by the Reds.

Ruben Amorim is said to have plenty of admirers at the club and Fabrizio Romano has reported that the Portuguese is the ‘main name’ now on Liverpool’s list.

Another exciting young manager, Roberto De Zerbi, keeps getting a mention as well. His work at Brighton has been well publicised and the 44-year-old is apparently liked by Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes.

However, The Athletic is also reporting today that Inter Milan manager, Simone Inzaghi, is another name Liverpool’s board are considering.

The Italian has enjoyed success in Italy, and guided Inter to the Champions League final just last season.

The report caveats that while Liverpool do like Inzaghi, he is considered an outsider as it stands, with the language barrier a potential problem.

Thierry Henry is a massive fan of Simone Inzaghi

While Inzaghi might not have got his hands in the Serie A title yet and he just missed out to Manchester City in the Champions League, he has impressed.

Indeed, Thierry Henry was blown away by what he saw Inzaghi’s team do. Referencing a goal involving the two wide centre-backs, Henry told CBS Sports earlier this month that he felt Inzaghi’s style of play was ‘genius’.

“I’ve never seen, in open play, at 0-0, away, the left centre-back crossing the ball to the right centre-back to score a goal. In my life, I’ve never seen that. This guy, Inzaghi, he’s a genius!”, Henry said.

Quite whether Inzaghi would bring that to Liverpool, would have to be seen.

But the 47-year-old is certainly impressing over in his homeland and a move to England might well be on the cards at some point.
