Liverpool are aiming to raise significant funds from player sales this summer as they prepare for a spending frenzy.
The Reds have stayed quiet in the transfer market over recent years but are likely to change their approach this time.
Liverpool are trying to sign Florian Wirtz in what would be a club record deal, and are highly likely to add a number of other signings.
While there is money in the bank, the Liverpool owners have always operated on a ‘sell to buy’ policy in the market.
Where possible, that looks set to be the case again.
As a result, any extra boost to the kitty is welcome, and having initially been headed towards a free exit, Liverpool have dug their heels in to receive a transfer fee from Real Madrid for Trent Alexander-Arnold.
The deal is not quite done yet, but as it speeds towards a resolution, Richard Hughes could be about to bank Liverpool a rather extraordinary fee.

Alexander-Arnold’s Liverpool exit has dominated headlines to the extent that many fans will be pleased to finally see him go.
Things have turned toxic between the Liverpool academy graduate and the supporter base, with Alexander-Arnold’s tone-deaf behaviour contributing to plenty of ill-feeling towards him.

Part of fans’ issue with the right-back is that he has been hurtling towards a free transfer exit.
In reality, aged 26, the ‘world-class’ Alexander-Arnold is easily a £75m+ player.
Nevertheless, according to The Guardian, Liverpool could at least get something back from his departure.
They claim that ‘Real’s determination to land Alexander-Arnold early’ may see the Reds earn a £10m transfer fee.

It is claimed that Madrid have opened talks with Liverpool over the deal, with Xabi Alonso keen to have his new full-back onboard for the Club World Cup.
Meanwhile, The Times report that the Reds have been ‘determined’ to hold out for a chunk of money in order to let Alexander-Arnold leave early.
Although no fee is mentioned, talks are said to be ‘accelerating’, with a suggestion that a deal could be completed within 24 hours.
If Liverpool are able to secure £10m for a player who would have left for nothing in just a few short weeks, all praise should be directed towards Hughes and his team.
Madrid are clearly desperate to get Alexander-Arnold in for this summer’s tournament and Liverpool are absolutely right to stick to their guns and demand a good amount.
After the way this saga has been handled, they owe the Spanish giants – and the player himself – absolutely nothing.
Clearly, though, it is still a massively reduced fee for a player who should be worth more than 10 times what Liverpool could bank.
And so, although he may hope it could make a difference to the way he is perceived, the Reds pocketing eight figures from his exit is unlikely to change many supporters’ views on Alexander-Arnold.
