While Liverpool’s summer transfer window was incredibly successful, there was one centre-back target who got away at the last minute.

Marc Guehi was supposed to be the last piece of the puzzle for Arne Slot’s side on deadline day, but Crystal Palace cancelled the move after a tumultuous final few hours.

The Reds may come to regret this decision, given the situation surrounding Ibrahima Konate’s potential move away from the club to Real Madrid.

While worries about the Frenchman’s future continue, given interest has ramped up, fans will have to trust Michael Edwards, who has proved why they shouldn’t be worried after extending the contracts of Mohamed Salah and Virgil Van Dijk.

However, it is still a worry for the club, given that the performances of Konate in the first three games have been lacklustre; the backup options of Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni each come with their own slight issues.

The injury proneness of Gomez, despite his brilliant shifts when fit, means he is unlikely to start every game, and the inexperience of Leoni will mean he needs more time before reaching Premier League standard.

Although the strength in other areas does mean the output in front of goal should see Liverpool through most games despite some early defensive wobbles, a new addition to the defence will still be necessary in January.

While the club is unlikely to come back in for Guehi in January, they could explore other options from further afield.

They could revisit the potential of a signing who was admired by Slot but was never finalised last year.

According to TEAMtalk, the club were attempting to sign Juventus star Gleison Bremer last year in the 2024/25 pre-season but opted to explore different options.

Interest in Bremer from Liverpool and other European clubs has never soured, so a swoop back in for the Brazilian could easily be on the cards if the club decides against a move for the Palace captain.

A five-time capped player for Brazil, the Italian league centre-half suffered an ACL injury that derailed his season last year, but he has now bounced back with impressive form.

In his last eight games, he has not conceded.

With Gleison on the pitch, they have kept a clean sheet in almost 50% of games, which drops to 33% without him in the back line.

Clearly, a rock at the back for his side, getting him into a Liverpool shirt should be a top priority if the Guehi deal falls through again or if the No.
