Liverpool’s transfer window ended with a bang on Monday as they finally secured the signing of Alexander Isak.

It had felt like a long summer at Anfield, with the Reds beginning to retool their team in the image of Arne Slot.

That came by way of the Liverpool squad seeing plenty of churn.

Half a dozen first team players were brought in, with more heading out the exit door.

But despite Liverpool moving towards a new era under Slot, they still left themselves with some work unresolved.

Centre-back was an issue for many supporters heading into the summer, and while Giovanni Leoni’s signing eased some of those concerns, fans would have loved to get Marc Guehi over the line on deadline day.

New reports have suggested that Liverpool will not come back in for Guehi in January, but the Reds have made a clear decision on how high he is on their list for the following summer.

Had Guehi been signed from Crystal Palace on Monday, Liverpool’s transfer window would arguably have been the greatest from any club in any division.

That they did not should not cause too much worry at Anfield, though, and according to The Telegraph, it isn’t.

Instead, the corridors of the AXA Training Centre are said to be filled with sympathy for Guehi, who saw a ‘dream move’ snatched away by his club at the last minute.

The 25-year-old was reportedly looking forward to moving north and, as a result, the Reds are said to believe that Guehi sees his long-term future at Anfield.

This would give Liverpool the edge over other potential suitors, and they reportedly believe that noises suggesting rivals could come in for Guehi are no more than a ploy to get them back to the table with Palace in January.

Keen to call the Eagles’ bluff, Liverpool will reportedly wait to get Guehi on a free instead, and are claimed to view the England international as their ‘top defensive target’ for 2026.

Interestingly, The Telegraph also report that Guehi is being viewed as a replacement for Joe Gomez at Liverpool, not for Ibrahima Konate.

The Reds are said to be awaiting Konate’s signature on a new contract, and there seemingly remains a chance that both he and Guehi could be with the Reds in a year’s time.

For Gomez, though, time looks to be almost up.

With a move for Guehi on pause, the 28-year-old is likely to stay around for the season, but perhaps no more than that.

Gomez almost left on deadline day, and although he has been given a reprieve, it is clear that Liverpool will need to replace him before long.

There is no suggestion of who the Reds could target if things do not go to plan with Guehi, but there are certainly a few more options out there.
