Following Milos Kerkez’s arrival on Thursday, the first part of Liverpool’s summer transfer business is now complete.

The Reds have signed three first-team players, while also adding a couple of back-up goalkeepers to boot.

Although the focus is now likely to fall on securing some outgoings before the start of pre-season, Liverpool could still do with adding one or two players.

The first position in need of attention is at centre-back, where Liverpool are reportedly closing in on Marc Guehi.

Once that is completed, the Reds will surely turn their attention towards signing a new striker.

In a fascinating market, all the noise suggests Liverpool’s dream target remains Alexander Isak.

And as the chatter surrounding Isak continues to grow ever louder, it has been revealed what Liverpool themselves have been briefing reporters to say about the Newcastle United star.

There is little question that Liverpool need a new centre-forward this summer.

And if there is any chance they can get him, Isak would be a dream addition.

Unfortunately, Newcastle have been quoting close to £200m for Isak, meaning the Reds would have to break the British transfer record once again to get him.

Nevertheless, according to the Newcastle Chronicle, Liverpool have been actively encouraging the prospect of a move for Isak in July.

They claim that ‘reporters who cover the club’ have been told not to dismiss the chances of a bid being lodged for the Swede next month.

Meanwhile, the Chronicle, very much a Newcastle-based source themselves, claim their club are simply briefing that Isak is contracted until 2028, extension or no extension.

In the meantime, manager Eddie Howe has reportedly been in contact with his star striker and is relaxed about the current situation.

‘Quiet talks’ are said to have been ongoing behind the scenes between Howe and Isak, with the manager handling conversations as both CEO Darren Eales and sporting director Paul Mitchell are both set to leave.

Given the current direction of travel, it would now be a surprise if Liverpool did not make a play for Isak next month.

Crucially, the Premier League’s Profit & Sustainability rules reset on July 1st, which, given Liverpool’s expenditure in June, could be an important factor.

Having kept their powder dry over the past 18 months, reports suggest that Liverpool can easily afford Isak, meaning a move could come down to player himself.

Clearly, Newcastle are going to play hardball over their best player, but if Isak himself indicates he wants to join the champions, the Magpies will be under a little pressure to sell.

This is all about to get very interesting, as Liverpool prepare for the next stage of what is fast becoming a legendary summer transfer window.
