Report: Liverpool have let Newcastle know exactly how they can get Harvey Elliott on the cheap this summer

Liverpool are set to make a good chunk of money in the transfer market as they turn their attention to completing a handful of high-profile sales.

Although the focus has been on incomings during the early part of the window, the Reds quietly made their third eight-figure sale of the summer on Wednesday.

Jarell Quansah’s exit has been a long time coming, but the completion of his £30m move to Bayer Leverkusen could set the ball rolling on a number of outgoings.

Quansah’s England U21 teammate Harvey Elliott is another who has been heavily linked with an exit after a quiet season for Liverpool.

Elliott starred in the recent European Under-21 Championship with England, adding to the feeling that he is simply too good to rot away on the Liverpool bench.

So far, however, the suggestion has been that if Elliott is to leave Anfield, he will not be doing so on the cheap.

Despite that, it has emerged that Liverpool could be willing to offer a discount on the 22-year-old’s sale.

If Liverpool do sell Elliott this summer, they are set to make a huge profit.

The former Fulham youngster was signed for a mere £1.7m in 2019.

Nevertheless, the Reds will want to be careful not to short-change themselves on a player who could go on to become a star elsewhere.

A fee of around £40m has been mooted in some areas, and according to the Newcastle Chronicle, this is a price Liverpool are willing to do business at, but only under certain circumstances.

They claim the Reds will accept £40m from Newcastle for Elliott but on condition that a buy-back clause is inserted into the deal.

Liverpool made a similar arrangement with Leverkusen for Quansah, ensuring they have first option on the centre-back if he develops into a player they’d like in their squad again.

And the Chronicle claim that the fee for Elliott will be lowered if the buying club, in this case Newcastle, agree to those terms.

If not, an outright sale will reportedly set the Magpies back £50m.

After looking so good during the U21 Euros, many Liverpool supporters have been asking whether the Reds are about to make a big mistake with Elliott.

But the truth is that, while the youngster’s form has undoubtedly been impressive, the standard is at a much lower level than what is expected week-in week-out at Liverpool.

That isn’t to say that Elliott could not reach the necessary level.

But the most recent evidence is that he has not been able to hold down a place in the team.

In our opinion, there is a chance Elliott could still stay at Liverpool, but it would likely be dependent on Luis Diaz leaving the club.

Should Diaz go, Florian Wirtz could moonlight as a left-sided attacker, potentially opening the door for Elliott to get more minutes in an attacking midfield role.
