Liverpool enter the summer transfer window as Premier League champions, and the Reds look to flex their newfound status to the max in the coming weeks.

The Anfield side are set to make a number of exciting moves in the market, with Liverpool close to signing Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen as personal terms have also been agreed with Milos Kerkez.

With Bayern Munich now interested in Cody Gakpo, the transfer machine is unlikely to stop anytime soon in the red half of Merseyside, where Arne Slot’s side could have the most transformative window in some years in a quest to reclaim the Premier League.

And Liverpool have now made their first move to sign one of the most exciting defensive talents in world football.

According to TeamTalk, Liverpool have made an enquiry for RB Leipzig defender Castello Lukeba, with the France youth international a player who has been on the Reds’ radar for quite some time after an impressive stint in the Bundesliga.

Having missed out on Real Madrid-bound Dean Huijsen, Liverpool have changed course in their bid to sign a new centre-back to compete with Virgil van Dijk and former Leipzig defender Ibrahima Konate, with Lukeba in the Anfield side’s sights.

With the Bundesliga’s official website comparing Lukeba to Manchester City’s £78m-rated defender Josko Gvardiol, the 22-year-old talent is regarded as one of the most exciting centre-backs in Europe, with the same piece lauding the youngster as a ‘standout’ prospect.

Indeed, Liverpool know they need a new centre-back for next season, and with a move for Lukeba now being made, it could be a matter of time before the Leipzig defender is on his way to Anfield to become the latest part of Slot’s grand plan.

Liverpool were unlucky to miss out on Huijsen, with Madrid making the first move to trigger the AFC Bournemouth defender’s release clause in a deal that could serve Los Blancos well for the next decade.

Yet as an alternative, Lukeba could be a dream defensive signing for Liverpool, with the French youngster ticking all the boxes for what the Reds are looking for in a centre-back that could one day become a regular at the back.

With Liverpool’s track record of signings from Leipzig in recent years also quite a success, Lukeba could become the next talent from the Saxon-based club to establish himself as a top player for the Reds, with a deal seemingly in the works as we speak.
