Report: Liverpool legend now in the running for surprise managerial role after being sacked in January

No Liverpool legend is as big in the 21st century as Steven Gerrard, though the former midfielder has had mixed success during his time as a manager.

Despite winning a Scottish Premiership title with Rangers, Gerrard’s triumphs since leaving Ibrox have been few and far between, with the former Anfield captain failing in the Premier League before making a surprise move to Saudi Arabia with Al-Ettifaq in 2023.

Even after making some huge signings, including former Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson, Gerrard was dismissed from Al-Ettifaq in January of this year, with the 44-year-old coach now looking for his next role on the touchline.

And a surprise move could now be in the pipeline for the Liverpool legend if recent reports are to be believed.

According to the Daily Mail, Gerrard is in contention to make a sensational switch back to Rangers, with the former Villa manager one of three managers being considered by the Scottish giants after the departure of Barry Ferguson.

Rangers have endured another difficult season with Celtic storming to yet another Scottish Premiership title as their blue-half Glasgow rivals once again suffered a trophyless year, though their run to the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals was a high point.

Which is why a swoop for Gerrard to return to Scotland is an appealing prospect for Rangers, with the Liverpool legend leading the Bears to their last title in 2021, even if the English manager’s record since leaving has been poor.

Indeed, a return to Rangers could be appealing for Gerrard, and for Liverpool fans, the Anfield faithful will be keen to see one of their greatest sons succeed again on the touchline having struggled in recent years.

Gerrard’s move into management hasn’t gone quite exactly to plan, with dreams that the former captain could replace Jurgen Klopp one day at Anfield now seemingly like a far-off fantasy that’s unlikely to become true.

Yet Gerrard isn’t the only Liverpool legend to take the leap into management in recent years, with Xabi Alonso famously leading Bayer Leverkusen to an unbeaten domestic double last season as the former midfielder looks set to join Real Madrid this summer to succeed Carlo Ancelotti.

With Dirk Kuyt also a manager and even open to returning to Liverpool, many of the Anfield greats continue to leave a lasting impact in football well after their playing days, with Gerrard’s potential return to Rangers one that could excite supporters.
