Slavisa Jokanovic is backing Sheffield United’s pursuit of Ben Davies as the Liverpool defender faces an uncertain future at the Premier League giants, according to The Star.

While it would be unfair to suggest a dream move has descended into something more akin to a nightmare for the former Preston North End defender, his time at Anfield certainly hasn’t gone to plan.

Davies probably couldn’t believe his luck when Liverpool came calling in the final few hours of the January transfer window.

And while the one-time Tranmere Rovers loanee would have been under no illusions about his place in Jurgen Klopp’s plans – he was always going to be a back-up option and little more – Davies surely expected at least a flicker of a chance in that famous red shirt.

Instead, he was left out of the matchday squad for 13 out of a possible 17 Premier League fixtures between January and May. Davies is still awaiting his competitive debut for the club.

And although the Merseyside giants have no immediate plans to cash in on Davies, according to The Athletic, that appears to be more the result of uncertainty surrounding Nat Phillips not to mention the long-standing injury issues endured by Joel Matip, Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk.

Sheffield United still hope to twist Liverpool’s arm, holding talks with the 2019 European champions about a deal that would see 26-year-old Davies return to the division where he made his name at Preston.

Head of recruitment Paul Mitchell is a big fan – the Blades were keen last summer too but refused to pay £10 million – and new manager Jokanovic is understood to have given a potential swoop for Davies the green light.

Left-footed, commanding and comfortable with the ball at his feet, Davies would finally fill a void created by Jack O’Connell’s absence and the departure of West Bromwich Albion target Kean Bryan.

Liverpool have a decision to make, then. Do they continue to imprison Davies in a gilded cage or open the door and set him free?

A penny for the defender’s thoughts too. Would he rather play week in, week out in the Championship or wait for a chance that may never come at the club of his dreams?
