Liverpool’s summer transfer window is getting exciting before the season has even come to a close.

The Reds still have two games left to play before the curtain comes down on their Premier League-winning campaign.

But with the Liverpool players living it up in Dubai and Arne Slot partying in Ibiza, it’s clear that everyone is simply going through the motions before the summer fun begins.

In the meantime, sporting director Richard Hughes is not hanging around as he aims to strengthen the Liverpool squad.

Jeremie Frimpong looks certain to arrive as the first signing of the year after news that Liverpool are set to trigger his release clause.

In the meantime, Frimpong’s Bayer Leverkusen teammate Florian Wirtz has become a top target, too.

And as the Reds push to get the Leverkusen pair to Anfield, it turns out that both have already visited, and played at, the Liverpool training ground.

It is not a surprise that Liverpool have set their sights on two Leverkusen players.

Xabi Alonso has built a superb team full of impressive talents.

The Reds got to see that for themselves in November, when Alonso visited Anfield for the first time as a manager in the Champions League.

Although Liverpool eventually outclassed them on the night and won 4-0, Leverkusen showed plenty of threat in the first-half especially.

Frimpong even scored at the Kop end, but his goal was ruled out for handball.

Interestingly, the Liverpool ECHO report that the day after their meeting, Liverpool granted Leverkusen permission to train on their pitches in Kirkby.

As both Frimpong and Wirtz were part of the team that travelled to face the Reds, they have now already seen the inner workings of Liverpool’s famed facility.

Given how meticulous the Liverpool transfer operation is, you would not rule out the possibility that the Reds were playing a little bit of 4D chess here.

It has never been fully revealed why Liverpool allowed Leverkusen to train on their pitches in November.

What can be said, however, is that this is certainly not common practice for teams travelling to face each other in any competition, let alone the Champions League.

Clearly, the Alonso factor must have played a part.

The Spanish coach is still well-regarded on Merseyside and having played in Liverpool Legends games over the years he still has a good relationship with the club.

But also, there was perhaps already a feeling from the Reds that they will be targeting both Frimpong and Wirtz come the summer.

Given the impressive stature of the AXA Training Centre, it couldn’t have done any harm to let two future targets go behind the scenes to see what could be their new home.
