Liverpool have been linked with a transfer for Atalanta defender Cristian Romero.

According to Calciomercato, the Reds have been following the ace ‘for some months’. And despite their transfer of Ibrahima Konate, the side is ‘studying’ his situation.

Romero has quite a complicated situation on his hands. He was a Juventus player when he joined the third-placed side last summer. However, his loan deal had a €16m (£13.6m) option to purchase.

It is thought the Black and Blues will take up the option to purchase the defender outright. And they are demanding a fee of €50m (£43m) from interested parties for the 23-year-old.

Merseyside rivals Everton have also been linked with a move for the Argentine. Whilst Manchester United are thought to be in for the South American.

After the transfer of Ibrahima Konate, signing Romero would be overkill from Liverpool.

The defender would simply saturate the centre-half position for the Merseysiders.

They already have Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez returning from long-term injuries. Meanwhile, the club still have Joel Matip and Nathaniel Phillips, who impressed last season.

To top it all off, Fabinho has the capabilities to play in the centre of defence should Jurgen Klopp need him.

The reported fee is a steep figure to pay for a player, who would most likely hardly start for the Reds.

Meanwhile, Gini Wijnaldum is set to depart the club at the end of the month, the club announced.

That £43m would be put to better use in buying a replacement for the Dutchman rather than wasting it on a defender.

Smart investment is needed by Liverpool as they look to take back their crown from Manchester City.
