Caoimhin Kelleher has been an integral part of the Liverpool squad this season after Alisson picked up a hamstring injury in mid-February.

The Republic of Ireland international deputised excellently for the Reds and has proved in this two-month stint that he is unequivocally good enough to be a first-choice for most Premier League sides.

This is evidenced by Nottingham Forest’s late January bid to try and turn the head of Kelleher by offering more football.

Forest manager Nuno Espírito Santoss, being a former goalkeeper himself, is believed to be a big fan of the 25-year-old.

But being a backup ‘keeper is hurting the 25-year-old’s Irish career, and he’s getting to the age where he ought to be playing club football on a regular basis.

Kelleher has not been in the starting lineup for his nation in recent months.

Gavin Bazunu of Southampton, who currently plays in the Championship, has been chosen instead.

However Kelleher’s homegrown status has meant that his sale was not as simple as negoaitiong a deal.

Jurgen Klopp previously saying on the Irishman earlier in the season:

“We had discussions in the summer, obviously, about it [Kelleher leaving].”

“He is homegrown and all these kinds of things.”

“So we have to make sure, first and foremost, the first responsibility is to do the best for Liverpool.”

Celtic were also reportedly sniffirng around Kelleher with manager Brendan Rogers believed to be heading the interest.

Liverpool would not stop Caoimhin Kelleher from exploring a move

Lewis Steele of the Daily Mail has suggested that Liverpool will allow Kelleher to leave in the summer should offers satisfy all parties.

Furthermore, he suggests that the interest from Nottingham Forest could be reignited at the end of the season

Steele writes:

“The Irishman was subject to strong interest from Nottingham Forest in the last days of the January transfer window but Liverpool turned down the relegation-threatened club’s approaches.”

“Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo is keen to re-explore signing Kelleher, though.”

“Liverpool would likely not stand in Kelleher’s way if he did want to leave the club in search of a No 1 jersey elsewhere, though, with Forest just one of many clubs interested in securing his services.”

“Celtic are very keen but would almost certainly be priced out of a move.”

“It means the Reds will likely be in the market for a No 2 goalkeeper this summer, with several on-loan youngsters not ready to step up to the position which has seen Kelleher play 26 times this season.”
